Payments for Ecosystem Services

Case Study: Lake Naivasha Catchment, Kenya

Over 15 years, 4,000 farmers have been placed on our payments for ecosystem services contract forms. This was the first "payments for watershed services" structure in East Africa, originally catalysed by CARE Kenya and WWF-Kenya. The Lake Naivasha Growers' Group is the payer and the smallholder farmers in the upper-catchment are the service providers.

Farmers in high risk areas were identified for receipt of payment in return for land-uses which improved watershed service provision.
